Refers to a type of auction where a single item / lot are sold. English auctions are generally the most common type of auctions found worldwide. Interestingly enough, English auction is known to have been in use since antique times; from this auction format the word derives: the latin word augere means to increase Contrast to Dutch and Yankee-Dutch auctions.
